There is a spirit world and there is a physical world, but most people choose not to believe there is a world beyond what they see. Spiritual attacks are one of the works of the devil, and it can happen in different ways.
The devil usually targets what you love or cherish most. For some people, he could target their health. He sees to it that they are incapacitated and not able to do anything productive. They helplessly watch themselves wasting away. Money will also drain out from their pockets as they settle endless medical bills. For others, he would attack their finances outright. They might earn good money but never use it for anything tangible. Still for others it could be their marriage that is under attack. The devil has a three-fold mission: To steal, to kill and to destroy, (John 10:10) and he would stop at nothing until his mission is accomplished.
Someone you know may currently be experiencing some difficulties in their marriage, business, and career or in their spiritual life. To clear all doubt of superstition or paranoia, they may have carefully examined the reasons behind their misfortunes. They may have discovered they were not able to pinpoint any physical reason why these things are happening to them. Yet the series of affliction still continue with no hope of stopping. One has to be vigilant just as the Bible says in 1Peter 5:8, “the devil roams around like a hungry lion seeking whom to devour.” Everything that happens in the physical world starts from the spiritual world. In so far as you are a child of the Kingdom, you are constantly in a battle. You must be ready to engage in spiritual warfare as a child of God. Your position in the Kingdom will always be a threat to the devil. Apostle Paul says, “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms,” (Ephesians 6:12). If you are wondering whether you can fight and conquer the devil and his sponsored spiritual attacks, the answer is, “Yes!!” The word of God assures us victory in Romans 8:37, which says that “we are more than conquerors through Christ who loves us.”
The Bible tells the story of Job and how God loved him. Job was a righteous man and walked blameless before God. He was the wealthiest man in the land of Uz where he lived. He had seven sons and three daughters who were the most beautiful women in the whole country. One day, Satan met with God, after roaming the realm of earth. God asked Satan what he thought of his servant, Job. Satan was jealous because he could tell that God was very proud of Job. He told God that Job was only righteous and faithful because He had blessed him in every area of his life. He insisted that if everything Job loved and cherished were taken away from him, he would denounce God as his Master. God wanted to prove Satan wrong, so He gave him permission to afflict Job in every area of his life but Satan was not permitted to kill him.
Satan proved himself to be a very wicked adversary when he made sure that every calamity that he had planned for Job befell him in one day! How much can a man take? One day, all his oxen and asses were at one spot grazing. Sabean bandits attacked them, took all his livestock away, killed his servants and left just one to return to deliver the bad news. While that servant was yet speaking, another servant came. A fire had fallen from the sky and burnt all the sheep, leaving that one servant to escape with the story. So it was with his camels, and his sons and his daughters; all of them perished on the same day. People thought Job was a hypocrite who pretended to be righteous, yet sinned in secret. How else could he explain why such magnitude of calamities had befallen him? His friends mocked him. His wife, disgusted at seeing her husband all cover up in rotten sores with pus dripping out of them told Job that it was better for him to curse God and die, (Job 1:1-22; 2:9).
Nobody knew or understood that Job’s fate had been sealed in an unseen spiritual realm. Nobody knew that Job was being put to the test. Nobody understood that Satan was trying so desperately to discredit Job in the sight of God. Not many Christians today would pass this test. It might even sound so ridiculous in our ears when compared to all the fantastic promises in the Bible written as the inheritance of God’s children. Job however turned to God in prayer and bitter lament. His faith never wavered. He waited upon the Lord and God restored his fortunes in sevenfold.
You may know someone in a similar predicament. That person may be too dejected to pray or engage in warfare. Here are some prayer points you can make to stand in the gap for your loved one. Intercessory prayers are always a very powerful weapon as can be seen in Ezekiel 22:30 which says, “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.” As children of God, we should always be available to stand in the gap for people under spiritual attack.
